What Past Participants Have to Say

Since the Beyond Workshop Series I have had many great opportunities within the dance world and non-profit educational world. I believe that the Beyond Workshop Series helped me believe in myself more and although doubt is a struggle that I go through, this workshop gave me hope.  In September, I was given the opportunity to co direct at one of our high school sites for Sports and Arts Foundation. his was my first collaboration that I directed with the support of my faculty, it was truly inspiring. Being able to bring 40 elementary students, 50 high school students and 30 staff together to create community through dance was so satisfying and I was reminded on how RL empowered me to do anything! Bianca Golden-BWS 2012

“I can only describe the BWS as an incredibly powerful experience! The developmental atmosphere that the talented team creates is like a nest; nurturing, warm and encouraging. Artists are empowered to fearlessly explore beyond their abilities; connecting with the deepest emotions and allowing expression, body and soul to become one. BWS gave me back the thirst to dream, the hunger to believe and the courage to challenge the limits set by a fearful mind. Thank You RL for Daring us to Go Beyond!” Luis Armando Benitez – BWS 2012

RL has helped me in every aspect of my life. As an actor, as person, as a family member. Everything I learned in the Shakespeare workshop and choir I can apply in my life. It has given me the courage to go beyond my wildest dreams. It has given me the tools and the confidence to pursue my acting. It has helped me to participate in our community and to give back to the community and in the end it has helped me be a better son and brother to my family. I can’t explain how it works but it works and I am proud to be a part of this amazing organization. -Tony Castellanos (Shakespeare and Choir)

Being part of BWS, I always have to pinch myself and realize how proud and privileged I am to be in a room full of talented, strong Latino artists who share the same vision and the same hopes for our community! The BWS Series is about commitment, hard work, taking risks…apply those and you’ll definitely grow! -Israel Gutierrez (Dance and Shakespeare)

BWS is a wonderful experience that enabled everyone to sharpen their skills in their vocal craft. William Wade was one of a kind! He really focused on the growth and empowerment of all the participants. -Natalia Arias (Choir)

The energy in the room during BWS is beautiful. Everyone pushes each other, cheers each other on, applauds when we see a breakthrough. The community is extraordinarily loving and supportive. It’s amazing to see how you can grow and how you help others grow as well and how those two things fuel each other. A year later, I still have quotes saved in my phone from my friends at BWS. Cannot wait for the next year! -Jewel Elizabeth, actress, dancer & VO artist (Dance)

D2GB Children’s Performing Arts Camp @ Pearl Studios
10:00 am – 3:00 pm

“I am taking D2GB with me everywhere I go now and I will try to face my challenges”
-Marie Vargas, Camper 15

Our campers are the proof that the 5th year of our D2GB Children’s Performing Arts Camp accomplished more than we imagined!

We had nearly 200 campers join us for a week of art and imagination. We added new classes such as puppetry, on camera acting, cartoon voice over and an Imagination Boot Camp! We also continued to share the latino culture and heritage through classes like the Argentinian theatre style of Murga and Mexican Folkloric Dance. We want to thank all the parents and organizations that joined us in making a difference through the arts: Mercy Center, Pachamama, Cypress Hills, Arts to Grow, All Purpose Room, Urban Health Plan, and Adolph S Ochs PS/IS 111.

In collaboration with the film “Step Up Revolution”, we were able to go beyond and end our camp with a flash mob on 52nd Street! It didn’t stop there. The week after the camp we brought over 60 campers to see the Theatreworks USA production of Skippyjon Jones, 50 camp participants and their parents to the pre-screening of “Step Up Revolution” and 80 volunteers, campers and parents to see Zapata! The Musical. Thank you to all the teachers who donated their time, RL volunteers, the NYC Police department, Roseland Ballroom, Peter and Ana Edwards, Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS, and everyone who made this week possible!

In 2012, we Dare to Go Beyond using the theme of IMAGINATION to teach important life skills such as:

  • leadership
  • collaboration
  • commitment
  • respect
  • self-awareness
  • importance of a healthy living

“I learned lots about commitment and hard work…”
-Brian Alarcon, Camper, 16

“Como voluntaria viendo a todos los niños descubrir nuevas artes, creo que el campamento le ha ofrecido una nueva visión de sus posibilidades y capacidades como artista, tambien les ayuda a colaborar en equipo y descubrir talento que no sabian que tenian.”
-Camper Parent

“Absolutely I have seen an improvement!! Seeing my child stand up in front of so many kids and open himself to express his feelings was a moment I will never forget!! Each year he feels more and more comfortable with RL camp.”
-Camper Parent

R.Evolución Latina’s D2GB Children’s Performing Arts Camp is an annual program that is offered to over 100 under served children ages 7-17 within the five boroughs of New York City.  It is a free week-long camp where professional artists from the Broadway and Latino communities lend their talent and time to teach dance, singing, and acting to students who otherwise would not have access to the arts.

The D2GB Children’s Performing Arts Camp is possible through the generosity of the Herman Goldman Foundation.
